The Islamic Society of North America supports the concept of a living wage – that is, a fair wage that is able to sustain a dignified quality of life. Across the country, like-minded people are advocating for the passage of a $15 federal minimum wage. Given the quickly rising costs of living in urban centers, soon we may see calls for $20 by 2020.

However, it is difficult to talk about wages without touching on the larger concept of wealth. Wages alone cannot close the growing wealth gap between the richest and poorest Americans. As American Muslims, we have been presented with a special responsibility to tackle this issue, as our community has the largest wealth gap out of any religious group in the United States.
